In September the board approved a slow transition to face to face instruction approving two phases to transition some students to Plan B: Blended Learning. The first phase began on September 21 as prekindergarten and exceptional children in adaptive classrooms returned to a blend of face to face instruction and remote learning. Under this plan, kindergarten through third grade students will continue this phase in, moving to Plan B on October 19. In a regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting Monday evening, the Nash Board of Education heard from district leaders as they shared data on reopening schools. The board approved Superintendent, Dr. Steve Ellis recommendation to continue the slow phase into Plan B, adding Grades 4 and 5 on November 2, 2020. At each phase, students slated to return to school will have the option to to continue in a remote learning environment. The Nash County Public School’s Virtual Academy allows families to opt into remaining in remote learning as the district moves students to face to face instruction. Elementary schools contacted parents over the last several weeks to determine which students will return to school face to face, and which students will remain in remote learning. Of the 6,653 elementary students in the district, 36% (2,394 students) have opted to remain in remote learning. The 4,259 elementary students who will transition to a blend of face to face instruction will be assigned to one of two tracks, attending school Monday through Thursday every other week. The school day will be shortened to accommodate symptom screening procedures, social distancing and teacher planning to support a blend of virtual and face to face instruction. The school day will begin at 8:15 am and students will be dismissed at 1:15 pm. Detailed information regarding the plan to return to face to face instruction will continue to be posted on the district website in the #NCPSSTRONG 2020-21 Reopening Plan section at www.ncpschools.net (https://www.ncpschools.net/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1803991&type=d&pREC_ID=1973542&tota11y=true).
