These are unprecedented times. COVID-19 (coronavirus) is a global pandemic and a national emergency, and nobody is certain what the next days, weeks, or months hold. The health, well-being and safety of our members, participants, volunteers, and staff is our top priority.

Since our inception in 1911, we have always been that organization that walked in the direction of the challenge. During this time, we are being asked to make a choice; either we close our facility entirely in order to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus or stay open to our community while taking the calculated risk that we can protect people from exposure. This decision does not come as an easy one for us, but a very important one that has been made at the advisement of many state and local health experts, with the idea of “flattening the curve” of the virus spread so that our hospital systems can be responsive to those who are sick in a timely and reasonable manner.

Because the YMCA is a socially responsible nonprofit committed to providing safe and healthy environments for adults and children, the YMCA of the USA and the NC Alliance of YMCAs are recommending that NC YMCAs close facilities and suspend programs for a minimum of two weeks. After consultation with those above entities as well as our local health department, and our Executive Committee, our YMCA has made the decision to shut down Monday, March 16th for a minimum of two weeks. The re-opening date is subject to change as the virus impact continues to develop. Any other updates during this time will be communicated to all patrons in a timely manner.

During this period, we are open to and will explore alternative ways to meet community needs in partnership with local health officials and other community leaders. Check community resources below to stay current on what we, as well as other community organizations, will be offering. We will also take this time to deep clean and sanitize our facility.

We know your membership is meaningful to us and that meaning lies in the relationships you have built at the Y. Those relationships are based upon the humanity you share with others. We are asking you to continue to support us in service of “our” children, families, and community. 

On behalf of everyone at the Harrison Family YMCA, I ask that you remain a part of our Y and continue to support the critical work we do in our community. The significant impact we have on individuals, children, families and those who need us most is dependent on our program and membership fees. Your membership fees enable our Y to help the community, support our employees and remain strong through these extraordinary circumstances. Our hope is that this suspension in services will be brief. We are committed to working safely and confidently as we move through and emerge from this health crisis together.

Thank you for your partnership, your patience, and your trust. Your participation and engagement make our YMCA the organization it is. The Y is not a place. It is a collection of people joined together, all of us, committed to improving lives and strengthening the community.

The Coronavirus has created enormous uncertainty; however, how we manage it is in our control. As members, we do not want you to think we do not care about you and your health and wellness. In fact, we are diligently working on plans to add other virtual and/or live stream classes during this time and will update you with details as soon as they are confirmed. Needless to say, we will reopen at first chance, and hope that you will find it in your heart to continue to support us.



Our Y's Local Key Leadership/Crisis Communications Team, as well as our NC YMCA Alliance Team, are continuing to stay updated with the latest information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, our local health departments, as well as school systems to take all necessary precautions and actions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. All updated information/updates regarding our facility, programming, and precautions will be communicated in a timely manner via e-mail, our mobile app, our website, as well as our social media pages.
