From the Director: May is the last full month of the school year before the summer holiday begins. Students and teachers have worked since fall covering all the subjects that students must learn to graduate and move on to college and careers. Getting an education requires sustained effort and concentration. When the summer comes, everyone takes a break. While having some time off is terrific, we all need to keep our brains engaged, challenged, and learning all year long. Taking advantage of the summer months for family visits to the library, children's museum, and park programs is a great way to include learning with vacation pursuits. It is just as important to exercise our brains as it is to exercise our bodies because when we stop training, we lose some of the progress we've made. This is called the "summer slide" when students lose reading and math skills while out of school on summer vacation. Public libraries everywhere fight back against the summer slide with summer reading programs. Reading keeps your mind engaged and the summer is the perfect time for students to explore their personal reading interests. Library programs are designed to provide experiences that capture the imagination and stimulate your brain. Visits to museums, nature preserves, parks and aquariums are also learning rich activities. The Imperial Centre maintains the Science Museum and Planetarium which are wonderful resources for families. Admission is free for Rocky Mount residents on Sunday. Summer reading and learning boost school success year round! Catie Roche, Library Director Senior Day & the 5th Annual Job Fair in May Braswell Memorial Library will be hosting Senior Day on May 20th from 11am-1pm in the Warner and Wiley Rooms. The fifth annual Job Fair will be held on May 17th from 11am-1pm on the second floor. The 2017 Senior Day Celebration will have over 20 local vendors to provide community information, resources, and activities for the senior citizens of our community. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy designated the month of May as "Older Americans or Senior Citizens Month" to both honor our older citizens and to assess their present needs. Adult Services Librarian LaKesha Joyner said" More than ever before, older Americans are working longer and trying new things. Braswell Memorial Library provides seniors with a safe and welcoming destination that offers opportunities to interact with their community." Joyner also said she hopes Senior Day will continue to grow each year. The Job Fair is part of Braswell Memorial Library's priority to assist patrons who are seeking employment opportunities. The library offers assistance with resumes, online applications and a Job Fair Preparation Workshop including information on "Dressing for Success." By combining forces with local industries, this event has the potential to help find quality applicants for open positons, and employment for area residents to make this year's Job Fair a great success. Summer Reading 2017: Build a Better World Braswell Memorial Library will host its annual Summer Reading Kickoff on June 16 from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. The library's back lawn will be transformed into an outdoor festival with games, food and entertainment. Balloon sculptors, stilt walkers, and local mascots will wander through the maze of bounce houses, carnival games and food tents- provided by local vendors such as Chick-fil-A, Gardner's Barbecue and others. This much anticipated summer event starts the library's Summer Reading Program that offers toddlers, school children and adults alike the chance to fend off the "summer slide" in their reading skills. For many families with children, especially elementary-aged children, the public library is the only community space available during the summer months where they can access free educational and cultural enrichment activities and programs. This year, Braswell will hold several events to encourage children to read and Build a Better World, this year's Summer Reading theme. Starting on Wednesday, June 21st the CCSB REPTILE RESCUE will educate us about the reptile species at the Imperial Center. On Wednesday, June 28th the Amazing Teacher will amaze us with exciting ways to build a better world. On Wednesday, July 12th the Balloon Lady will astound us with her creative ways to build with balloons. On Wednesday, July 19th Pork Chop Productions will entertain us with the story of the 3 Little Pigs. Why Summer Reading? Children who don't practice the skill of reading will start the school year behind where they were in June while those who do read over the summer will maintain their skill level and maybe even show improvement. Summer Reading encourages kids to read whatever they want, which helps instill a love of reading for recreation. Studies show that kids who read for fun often out-perform kids who don't in school. Librarians know how to connect kids with books, and summer is the perfect time to get the job done. Summer Reading and all of its associated activities are absolutely free, offering everyone safe, educational opportunities throughout the summer.
