Mediation Center of Eastern Carolina The Nash and Edgecombe Teen Court program supports the local community by serving juvenile delinquents. Juveniles ages 11-17 who commit certain misdemeanors are given a second chance. On the 3rd Tuesday of every month we hold Teen Court. We use student volunteers from Nash and Edgecombe county schools from grades 7-12. The volunteers serve as our defense and prosecution teams, the clerk and bailiff and our jury. Based on a predetermined list of sanctions, our jury determines a constructive sentence. Juvenile delinquents are sentenced to community service, a life skills class, restitution if applicable, and additional sanctions that may include a written assignment. Delinquents are given the option to complete the written assignments on their own or with help in our study hall. Our life skills classes are specific to the juveniles attending. Our youth volunteers have the opportunity to compete in mock trial competitions offered by our agency, the Mediation Center of Eastern Carolina and the North Carolina Teen Court association. We also offer the Teen Court Committee that includes Nash, Edgecombe, and Wilson county volunteers. Committee members run our social media, come up with fundraising ideas and operate our tutoring program. All delinquents will learn about the justice system and the skills taught include: decision making, priority setting, time & money management, communication skills, stress management and more. Part of what makes us successful is the teen court staff operates as a team. We would love to grow our team with adult and youth volunteers! We also have an opening for a part time contractor.
