There are several things you can do now to prepare for the upcoming canning season. Take this time to organize and inspect your supplies, make a list of what you need, have your pressure gauge tested, and purchase any needed supplies. You will need to have your dial gauge tested. Call your local extension office to see if they can test your dial gauge. Make sure all canner parts are in good working order and replace the gasket if necessary. Check your jars and determine if you have enough canning jars on hand. Check the jars for scratches, nicks, and chips. You will need to discard jars with defects. Two-piece metal canning lids and bands are recommended for canning. Make sure bands are undented and rust free. The lids should be used only once however, bands in good condition may be reused.
