Rocky Mount N.C., March 29, 2021 – The Harrison Family YMCA is open for registration for their 2021 Summer Day Camp and encourages families to register as soon as possible. Parents can register online at: https://www.harrisonfamilyy.org/out-school-care/summer-camp or at the YMCA on 1000 Independence Drive in Rocky Mount. Financial Assistance is available to those who apply and qualify, thanks to funds raised through the YMCA’s Annual Campaign. YMCA Summer Camp has been around for many, many years, but this year it is more important than ever. We understand the struggles that many families and children have experienced this past year with our nationwide pandemic. It has taken a toll on their education and well-being. Camp will be here to support families by helping to close the learning gap, nurturing each child’s potential, instilling character values, and more. To deliver on the Y’s commitment to nurture the potential of every child and teen, day camp focuses on character development from the following practice areas: EMOTION MANAGEMENT: Adults support youth to be aware of and constructively handle both positive and challenging emotions. EMPATHY: Adults work with youth to relate to others with acceptance, understanding, and sensitivity to diverse perspectives and experiences. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: Adults encourage youth to act, persist, and initiate goals and outcomes even through the ups and downs of difficult situations and challenges. RELATIONSHIP BUILDING: Adults foster experiences where youth plan, collaborate and coordinate action with others. RESPONSIBILITY: Adults develop youth to be reliable and committed and to fulfill obligations and challenging roles. Camp is located at the YMCA and is available to Pre-k (must be 4 years old) through 8th grade (based on grade as of August 2021). Camp will run June 1st – August 20th with any weeks of choice available for registration. Curriculums will include 2 hours per day of enrichment time that, through research, has been proven to help close the learning gap. Other activities include swim time each week, “bead time” an incentive program for positive character development, weekly spirit days, morning huddle groups, and morning and afternoon assemblies. Children will also participate in variety activities and mastery activities. Variety allows them to discover their interests and talents. Mastery activities allow them to build on their favorite activity and practice that interest more so they can build their sense of achievement and grow their individual passions.
