A Newsletter for Alumni and Friends of North Carolina Wesleyan College CSX To Build $272 Million Rail Hub Near Wesleyan North Carolina Wesleyan College was honored to be a part of the CSX/Gateway Partnership announcement July 19, that CSX will be building an intermodal terminal called the Carolina Connector a few miles from the College, just inside Edgecombe County. CSX will be investing over $272M into the community over the next few years which includes over 300 permanent, full-time jobs in Rocky Mount. NC Wesleyan Announces 2016 Athletics Hall of Fame Class Since 1999, N.C. Wesleyan College has honored 64 former athletes, administrators, and coaches by enshrining them in its Hall of Fame. These individuals have created a higher standard for Bishop athletics and were selected based on their outstanding accomplishments. This year's class meets these same standards and will comprise the 18th group of honorees. The North Carolina Wesleyan Department of Athletics is pleased to announce that the 1999 National Champion Baseball Team, along with veteran coaches Charlie Long and Ernie Jones, have been chosen to comprise its 2016 Hall of Fame class. The 1999 Battling Bishop Baseball Team secured the program's second Division III National Championship with a thrilling 1-0 win over St. Thomas on June 1, 1999 in Salem, Virginia. The victory remains the only 1-0 championship win in the history of Division III baseball. Read more. Dickerson has joined the college as Coordinator of Parent Relations. In her new role, Dickerson is responsible for developing lasting relationships with parents and families throughout the college experience and beyond. She will serve as a resource to parents as they transition their students to college and assess family needs for communication and services to ensure a high quality family experience at Wesleyan. "Transitioning to college can be a stressful time for both students and parents. We want to make the transition and the overall experience for our families the best possible" stated Eddie Coats, interim Vice President of Advancement, "Celia brings a tremendous amount of experience working with families from her former role as Director of Weekday Education at Englewood Baptist Church and as a volunteer at Wesleyan. We are excited to have her in this important role." Originally from Rocky Mount, Celia graduated from Meredith College with a Bachelor of Arts in History. She is a member of the North Carolina Association of Educators, the Meredith College Alumnae Leadership Committee, and an active member of Englewood Baptist Church. Student Employment Fair Scheduled For August 31 North Carolina Wesleyan College will host its first ever Student Employment Fair on August 31, 2016 from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the Garner Lobby of The Dunn Center for the Performing Arts. The college seeks to assist students in easing the financial challenges of being a full-time college student. We are inviting local employers to meet our part-time job seeking students and discuss potential opportunities with them. USA South Picks NC Wesleyan Football Third Montgomery, Ala. - The USA South's 2016 Football Media Day was held Monday, August 1st, at Huntingdon College. Each of the Conference's eight football coaches addressed the media and gave their thoughts on the upcoming season. The USA South preseason poll was also unveiled at the beginning of the event, with the Battling Bishops earning a 3rd-place billing. Last season, the Bishops tied for 2nd-place in the USA South standings after posting a 5-2 record in league play. Wesleyan returns 15 starters from that squad, six on offense and nine on defense. Offensively, the Bishops will be led by 2015 USA South Offensive Player of the Year Malik Adams, who led the nation with 19 touchdown receptions last season. Joining him will be the league's 2015 Offensive Rookie of the Year Adrian Minondo at running back. Entering his fourth season at the helm of the program, head coach Jeff Filkovski returns 73 letterwinners overall and has high hopes that their experience will compliment a host of talented newcomers. These awards are presented to accomplished alumni with the goal of paying tribute for outstanding achievement and/or service to North Carolina Wesleyan College. Scott Marsigli to the new position of Institutional Research Analyst. In his new role, Marsigli will be assisting with accreditation efforts, preparing management reports, integrating technology to support college information and planning needs, and conducting special studies to aid in strategic decision making. This position is initially funded by the Title III grant the College was awarded in October 2015. Marsigli joined Wesleyan in 2002 as an adjunct English professor. He most recently was the Director of Freshman Advantage, the college's conditional acceptance program for students who need additional academic support in their first year of college. "We are excited to have Scott join us in this role to strengthen our institutional research efforts. Working under Dr. Larry Kelley, Scott will provide the needed support to improve our assessment and accreditation procedures which directly relate to improving student retention," stated, Dr. Evan D. Duff, Interim Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs. Marsigli graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Arts in English-Journalism. He earned his Masters degree in English from East Carolina University. Alumni Spotlight Ken McLeod '89 To Serve As New Alumni Board Parliamentarian/Treasurer Ken McLeod graduated from NC Wesleyan in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He went on to complete a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Virginia Tech. While a student at Wesleyan, Ken was heavily involved with the Phi Beta Lambda business fraternity and benefitted from an internship through the College. He has served on the Alumni Association Board for eleven years. Since graduating from NC Wesleyan, Ken has held Internal Audit jobs in the Corporate Headquarters for various companies, including Belk, Lance, Hanesbrands, and Gilbarco Veeder-Root. He recently joined Fortive Corporation as an Internal Audit Manager. As an Internal Auditor, he has had the opportunity to travel extensively; having visited 21% of all the countries in the world and every continent except Antarctica. Ken was married in 2008 to Terry Schadegg. Ken is looking forward to establishing the new Alumni Board role of Parliamentarian/Treasurer and hopes to help the Board ensure the Alumni Association has the funds available to engage more alumni in the Association. Faculty/Staff Spotlight Lindy W. Kitchin, Director of Counseling and Disability Services Lindy W. Kitchin has joined the college as Director of Counseling and Disability Services. In her new role, Kitchin will provide psychoeducation, support, and direct counseling services to the Wesleyan student body. A licensed clinical social worker and licensed clinical substance abuse specialist, Kitchin graduated with honors from the East Carolina University School of Social Work and Human Ecology and has more than ten years of mental health and substance abuse counseling experience. "We are excited to have someone with Lindy's diverse experience working with our students," stated Ed Naylor, Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, "Lindy is an outstanding clinician and we she will make important contributions to the lives of our students." Kitchin is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, a certified Prime for Life instructor/substance abuse education prevention instructor, and an active member of Dawsons Baptist Church. Student Spotlight Lalo Ugalde Serves Wesleyan Both On And Off Court After coming all the way from Queretaro, Mexico, Lalo Ugalde has made his mark here at NC Wesleyan. A senior business major, he can be found on the tennis court, at the admissions office or behind the camera around campus. His favorite part about being a student at Wesleyan is that he can be very involved. Lalo, who's actual name is Eduardo, plays on the men's tennis team and was the Conference Tournament MVP in 2014. "In the conference final against Methodist, we were leading 4-3. We needed one more win to earn our sixth consecutive conference title. With a three set victory at #4 singles I clinched the title for us. It was a great battle from everyone. That victory meant a lot for everyone," said Lalo. "Being a student-athlete can be tough with practices, homework, tournaments, and tests going on at the same time. If you feel overwhelmed in these situations you have to push yourself and work harder because these are the moments that matter and define us as a person, and when you succeed you will feel great." In addition to being on the tennis team, Lalo works in the admissions office with international students. Upon his graduation December, 2016, Lalo wants to stay in America and work for a few years to gain business experience. Eventually he would like to start his own business.
