Accept the BISHOP CHALLENGE before 5/31 Archway Dedicated To Coach Don Scalf A special ceremony was held April 6 to dedicate the soccer/lacrosse field to Coach Don Scalf. Former students, players, friends and family fondly remembered Coach Scalf for his dedication to NC Wesleyan College and his commitment to the students and athletes, Participating in Celebrating the Legacy - Coach Don Scalf were Charlie Long, Assistant Athletics Director, Dr. Dewey Clark '82, NC Wesleyan President/alumnus, Paul Bauer '86 family friend/alumnus, Rev. Alvin Horne '69, NCWC Men's Soccer Coach (1971-1977)/alumnus, Lloyd Nelson '67 basketball/alumnus, Gaye Slaughter Currier, volleyball player 1974, Mac Sykes '80 golf/alumnus, Beverly Biancur, Head Women's Soccer Coach and Ken Scalf, son of Don & JoAnne Scalf. "Coach Scalf was my mentor, friend, teacher and confidant. He was a great, great man. I learned everything from him. He took a young, inexperienced coach and molded me. He was a great listener and teacher. He was smart, calm and very caring. He had a way about him that I knew early on I wanted to emulate. God blessed me beyond belief by placing me at NC Wesleyan with Coach Scalf knowing I needed to witness first-hand the right way to do things. All things. I owe anything and everything good in my professional life to Don Scalf." Coach Mike Fox, UNC Head Baseball Coach Scalf coached for 18 years, served as Athletics Director for 6 years and taught for 36 years at NC Wesleyan. During his coaching career, Scalf's teams won Dixie Conference championships in basketball (1966) and golf (1970, 1971, 1972, 1973), earning him DIAC Coach of the Year honors on four occasions. In addition to his role as the first coach in both Bishop basketball and golf history, he also served as head coach for the College's inaugural women's volleyball team in 1974. An inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, NCWC's "Scalf Field" for soccer and "Don Scalf Court" for basketball/volleyball are named in honor of his dedication to Battling Bishop athletics. Coach Scalf passed away March 7, 2017. "You cannot live a perfect day until you do something for someone who can never repay you. These words remind me of the man Coach Scalf was. Coach Scalf gave me and others some perfect days." Eight of the ten Golden Leaf scholars, along with Dr. Dewey Clark, President, Eddie Coats, Vice President of Advancement and Leah Hill, Associate Director of Finance, expressed their gratitude for the financial support received from the foundation. North Carolina Wesleyan College was fortunate to have 10 of the 215 Golden Leaf Scholars selected from thousands of applicants. This year's Golden Leaf Scholars are Kelsee Whitley, Donielle Totten, Ca-Voncha' Pearce, Hayleigh Heckman, Summer Phillips, Taylor Carawan, Joanna Revels, Lluvia Perez, Haley Bonds, and Michael Wells. Students discussed their future plans and their involvement with the Golden Leaf Leadership Program. 1989 And 1999 National Champs Celebrate 20 And 30 Years A National Champions Reunion was held March 16 and 17 to commemorate the 20- and 30-year anniversaries of the 1989 and 1999 National Championships Baseball teams. Thirty-five former players and their families gathered for lunch on Saturday prior to being honored on the field at the NCWC vs Greensboro baseball game. On Sunday, many of the Champs traveled to Chapel Hill to watch UNC play Miami. After the game the group enjoyed spending time with Coach Mike Fox in the Carolina locker room. The 1989 team was coached by Coach Mike Fox and the 1999 team was coached by Coach Charlie Long. Wesleyan Gives Back Just two of the many ways Wesleyan students, faculty and staff give back to the Rocky Mount community. Six members of the NC Wesleyan football team donated their time to help with the annual Rocky Mount Kiwanis Club pancake breakfast fundraiser held Saturday, March 23. Alumni Class Notes Wendie Kennedy Roberts ('94) works as a Paralegal at James Scott Farrin Law Firm in Raleigh, NC. She has been a paralegal for almost twenty years. A type 1 diabetic, she serves on the board for the Eastern NC Chapter of JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). Wendie has a store on Etsy featuring unique and personalized items for all occasions, WackyWDesigns. She graduated from NC Wesleyan in 1994 with a Bachelor's in Psychology and Justice and Public Policy. Wendie and her husband, James, have two sons, CJ and Thomas. Kevin A. Barnes ('14) was recently hired by the Nash County Sheriff's Office as the new jail administrator. Barnes started his career in 1987 as Correctional Officer at Polk Youth Center in Raleigh, NC. He has worked in eleven different custody levels and held various managerial positions in Wake, Nash, Pasquotank, Pamlico, Craven, Wayne and Warren Counties. Barnes was the Assistant Commander for the Prison Emergency Response Team (PERT) for eight years and has earned various awards including the Old North State Award and has completed the Correctional Leadership Development Program. While working in the correctional field, Barnes went back to college in 2010 through the Adult Studies program at NC Wesleyan College. He graduated in 2014 with three degrees in Criminal Justice, Psychology and Religious Studies. Kevin and his wife, Priscilla, have one adult child. David Gurganus ('14) has been named Head Coach of the men's basketball program at Huntingdon College. He was previously assistant men's basketball coach for the Hawks and helped lead the program to a 13-13 record and a berth in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament. Gurganus played basketball for North Carolina Wesleyan College before serving as an assistant coach with the Battling Bishops and at Averett University. Gurganus earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science from North Carolina Wesleyan in 2014 and his MBA from Averett. Carl R. Lewis ('00) recently learned some of his photography has been selected to be used on Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia. Wikipedia is the largest and most popular general reference work on the World Wide Web. Lewis' photos are included in articles for Rocky Mount Electric Power Plant, Rocky Mount Central City Historic District and Rocky Mount, North Carolina to name a few. Dr. Lewis obtained his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from NC Wesleyan College in 2000, his masters degree from East Carolina University in 2003 and his PhD in Business Administration with a concentration in Criminal Justice from North Central University in 2011. He is currently Assistant Professor of Justice Studies at North Carolina Wesleyan College. Manley '12 age 49, died on April 10, 2019 in the comfort of her residence in Rocky Mount, NC. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2012 and her Master's degree in Human Services Counseling from Liberty University in 2014. She was owner of Rivers of Water Publishing. Robin was an author, motivational speaker, song writer, play writer and movie writer. She wrote the book, Blind Fate. Her mother, Geneva R. Manley, is a 1976 graduate of NC Wesleyan and daughter, Jasmyne Williams, is a 2015 NC Wesleyan graduate. Robin is survived by her mother, children and many other relatives and friends. Reserve Your Wesleyan Memorial Brick Students, organizations, parents, alumni, and community supporters now have the opportunity to inscribe their names at North Carolina Wesleyan College. Robin M. Manley '12 age 49, died on April 10, 2019 in the comfort of her residence in Rocky Mount, NC. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2012 and her Master's degree in Human Services Counseling from Liberty University in 2014. She was owner of Rivers of Water Publishing. Robin was an author, motivational speaker, song writer, play writer and movie writer. She wrote the book, Blind Fate. Her mother, Geneva R. Manley, is a 1976 graduate of NC Wesleyan and daughter, Jasmyne Williams, is a 2015 NC Wesleyan graduate. Robin is survived by her mother, children and many other relatives and friends.

The Office of Alumni Relations is selling bricks to be placed at the new entrance located at the south end of the Pearsall Library addition, or at the Leon Russell Chapel entrance.
