The Best Summer Ever at HARRISON FAMILY YMCA School is nearly out, and while kids typically burst into summer with a zealous energy, most parents can tell you it doesn’t take long for summer boredom to set in. But boredom is banished at the Harrison Family YMCA, where children can have their best summer ever thanks to a variety of programs and activities that stimulate both mind and body. “Children need an outlet to play and learn throughout the summer,” says Jacquelyn Price, CEO of the local Y. Summer day camp at the Y provides kids with adventure, healthy fun, personal growth and friendships that can take a so-so summer and turn it into a memory that lasts a lifetime. The YMCA’s day camp provides a welcoming environment for kids where they can belong, build relationships, develop character and discover their potential. Today, day camp is more vital than ever. To deliver on the Y’s commitment to nurture the potential of every child and teen, day camp fosters achievement, relationships, and belonging. These are essential dimensions of well-being that the Y cultivates through day camp: Campers experience achievement when they try different activities, learn what they like, and discover what they are good at. Campers have the opportunity to form healthy relationships with other children, caring adults, and role models, which helps them feel good about themselves and learn to get along with others. Campers connect through significant camp traditions and rituals that create a sense of belonging, so they feel included, accepted, and part of a community.? Camp this year begins on May 28th and is offered weekly, Mondays-Fridays from 6:30am until 6:00pm, until August 23rd. Financial assistance is also available. Applications for assistance are due by April 12th. Weekly activities include breakfast, lunch, and snack; opening and closing ceremonies with the entire camp group, huddle group time that creates small group interactions, variety activities that allow campers to explore and find their interests and talents, responsibility activities to help maintain the camp, mastery activities which give campers a chance to pick their favorite activity to build on, activity trips, and more. Some of the mastery activities that campers can choose from include art, gymnastics, competitive team sports, swim, recreational sports, rock climbing wall, coding, creative drama & writing, LEGO learning, world culture, active arcade, and much more. You can find all potential mastery activities on the webpage here:harrisonfamilyy.org/programs/summer-camps Since summer is synonymous with swim season, the Y encourages families to explore the benefits of swimming while also keeping safety top of mind. The Y’s swim lessons are aimed towards teaching children to learn to swim, as well as water safety. All camp participants can receive 15% off of swim lessons. Whether it’s helping children read, keeping kids safe around water or keeping them active and engaged throughout the summer, the Y has a program to benefit all youth in the community.
