With returning favorites and new classes, the spring season has something for everyone. Two new pilot programs will launch this season. Mommy+Me Arts, scheduled on Fridays in March from 10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m., will give children 2-3 years old and their caregivers the opportunity to explore a variety of art materials, experience new textures, improve fine motor skills, and enjoy being creative in a group setting. Children and adults alike will enjoy Make+Take, a lunchtime mini-workshop that explores different materials and techniques, on Wednesdays in April from 12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. Family Sundays and Make Art Saturdays both return for spring. A collaboration between the Maria V. Howard Arts Center and the Arts Education Department, Family Sundays gives families the opportunity to drop into the art gallery for art making, interactive play, gallery sketching, or to go on a self-guided exhibition tour! Every other Sunday from now through May 26, guests may visit the art gallery for an afternoon full of activities. Family Sundays are free and occur from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Make Art Saturdays allow visitors to experiment with and make different types of art every other Saturday, Feb. 23 – May 18, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. The workshops are free and open to guests of all ages. Helping participants explore techniques to create a range of sculptural and functional clay wares, Arts Education Center staple, Handbuilding with Clay will offer two classes. One class will be held on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., Feb.13 - March 20, and the other on Mondays, April 1 – May 6 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Wheel Throwing will offer classes two times per week, in the mornings from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Feb. 19 – March 14, and again April 2 – April 20. Participants should be at least 13 years old for Handbuilding with Clay and 14 years old for Wheel Throwing. The cost for each course is $103 for city residents and $154 for non-residents. Another returning favorite is the opportunity to interact with and hear from various artists during Lunch and Learn. Talk and Draw, Friday, April 12 from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m., will feature an artist and lecturer. Guests will explore art in two different ways; first, by listening to a brief talk. Then, participants will make their own work during this short, artist-led drawing session. The sessions are free. Lunch will be provided for a fee. For the rhythmically challenged and advanced, Jazz Funk: Master Class promises to get attendees moving on Saturday, April 6 from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. The hip-hop influenced dance style is for participants 14 years of age and older and costs $16 for city residents and $24 for nonresidents. Children will enjoy the Family Workshops on Saturdays, Feb. 16, March 30, April 13 and May 18 from 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. Sessions are Alphabet Characters, Clay Flower Pots, Clay Sculpture and ARTitecture, respectively. Other learning experiences include a variety of dance classes, Macramé, Crash Course In Acrylic Painting, Clay Sculpture Workshop and much more.
