The program will last 11 weeks and culminate with a graduation ceremony on May 16 at the Booker T. Theater. The Rocky Mount Citizens Academy is designed to acquaint residents with city governmental operations through interactive programs and education. Students may expect to meet with personnel in departments such as but not limited to, Police, Fire, Transportation, Parks & Recreation, Human Resources and Human Relations. The Citizens Academy is an initiative to increase awareness and foster positive relations between citizens and city staff. Sessions will begin March 7 and will run on consecutive Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. Interested participants must register by Thursday, Feb. 28. “This gives citizens an opportunity to not only learn more about what the city does, but citizens come together who never knew each other and begin to network,” said Loretta Braswell, Citizens Academy Coordinator. “They become ambassadors for the city and are more intimate with city government.” More than 100 people have graduated from the academy since 2010.
