Small-Toney has reopened the recruitment process for a Rocky Mount police chief. In the meantime, Captain George D. Robinson will fill the role of interim police chief, replacing Willie Williams who has served in an interim capacity since January. Robinson has worked with the Rocky Mount Police Department since 1992 when he started as a police officer in the Patrol Services Division. Since that time, the Shaw University graduate has climbed up the ranks, working as a community policing officer, police corporal in the Uniform Operations Division, police detective in the Criminal Investigative Division, police sergeant in the Uniform Operations Division, a Criminal Investigations supervisor, lieutenant and Support Services commander, Patrol Services commander and Administrative police captain. Currently, Robinson is a captain in the Criminal Investigative Division. "Captain Robinson is a stellar example of an officer who has made a tremendous mark in this community and within the Rocky Mount Police Department," said Small-Toney. "With over 27 years in law enforcement, he has been able to forge many different relationships and gain experience in education, executive management and training that is essential for this department and city to prosper." Robinson graduated from Shaw University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice. He is also a graduate of the Administrative Officers Management Program at NC State University and the Senior Management Institute for Police at Boston University. Robinson is also a member of the Police Executive Research Forum, International Association of Police Chiefs and North State Law Enforcement Organization. He is a board member for My Sister’s House and a proud member of the Rocky Mount Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Robinson will begin his duties as interim police chief starting Jan. 2, 2019.
