Twenty-three schools, as well as the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, Communities in Schools and PFLAG (Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays) also were part of the effort, which encouraged area students to wear blue to school, aptly titled Blue Shirt Day. The Rocky Mount Police Department donated anti-bullying stickers for students to wear, and several members of the department wore blue to support World Day of Bullying Prevention. Nashville Elementary school had an area-high 93 percent of its students participate in wearing blue, and it will be rewarded with an ice cream social Friday, Oct. 12. Strong showings also came from Rocky Mount Middle School (77 percent) and Baskerville Elementary (76 percent). In all, 40 percent of Nash-Rocky Mount Schools students participated in Blue Shirt Day. "It was encouraging to see so many schools and students participate in Blue Shirt Day," Rocky Mount Police Department Community Service Manager Yvette Jones said. "Several of the students not only wore blue, but they also participated in other anti-bullying activities, such as writing poems and drawing posters with bully-free messages and themes."
