The program was designed to help raise funds for the Curtis Dew, Jr. Advance Educational Studies Scholarship. Dew was a long-serving member of the Mayor’s Commission on Persons with Disabilities. During his 10-year tenure, he raised awareness for the needs of the disabled by actively representing the commission and serving on various boards. Dew passed away in 2014. The commission renamed the scholarship in his honor in 2015. As one of the city’s leading advocates for persons with disabilities, the awarding of the scholarship is a highlight for the commission members. Graduating high school seniors with a disability planning to attend an institute of higher learning are eligible for the scholarship. Currently, the commission awards two $250 scholarships each year. The Bowling for Disabilities event will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at The Bowling Center, located at 3250 N. Church Street in Rocky Mount. On that day, participants who have purchased a ticket to bowl, will present their ticket and receive a free shoe rental and two games of bowling. "Last year’s scholarship fundraiser was such a great success, and we hope to raise even more this year," said Jeffery Walston, Human Relations specialist for the city of Rocky Mount. "The goal of this collaboration is to increase awareness for individuals with disabilities and raise money to give additional scholarships to deserving students." With a $500 goal set for this year, the commission hopes to score a strike with the bowling fundraiser. Tickets are $10 and available in advance at the Human Relations Department on the first floor of the Frederick E. Turnage Municipal Building (City Hall), located at 331 S. Franklin St. in Rocky Mount. On the day of the event, tickets will also be available at The Bowling Center. For more information, call the Human Relations Department at 252-972-1181.
