For Immediate Release Contact: Alyssa Matthews Harrison Family YMCA 252-972-9622 x232 amatthews@rmymca.org YMCA Before & After School Care & NEW Teen Academy [Rocky Mount, NC 8/1/2018] – A new school year is filled with potential—a chance to start new routines and habits, build new friendships and discover new possibilities and interests. It’s an exciting time for many kids, however—at the end of the school day, 1 in 5 children kids do not have someone to care for them after school, according to Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness organization. As families are transitioning from summer to fall, the Harrison Family YMCA is offering programs to school-aged children throughout Nash and Edgecombe counties to keep youth active, busy and engaged during out-of-school time. Through a well-rounded approach to youth development, the Y’s programs offer activities in a caring and safe environment during the critical hours after school. Whether through sports, mentorship, or academic support, the Y nurtures the potential of youth throughout the school year. “Over 11 million children are unsupervised between 3 and 6pm, an essential time to help increase children’s success in school,” said Jacquelyn Price, CEO of the Harrison Family YMCA. “Afterschool at the Y is an opportunity for families to ensure their kids are receiving additional support, continued learning and a chance to participate in meaningful activities that can inspire children’s motivations and help them reach their potential.” The Y is a leading nonprofit committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, supporting their social-emotional, cognitive and physical development from birth to career. In the local Y’s School Aged Before & After School Care Program, children will expand their learning beyond the classroom. We use a balanced curriculum with opportunities for character development, STEM activities, arts and humanities, community service and physical activity. This program is located at the YMCA Future Leaders Childcare Center and 11 other schools in the two counties. Many of the school sites also offer the Before School Care Program. New this year is the Y’s Teen After School Academy for ages 13 and up. Learning doesn’t stop after the school day ends for all kids. The Y provides the academic support needed to help teen students achieve their full potential. Each day is filled with educational activities that also incorporate health education, games, team building, homework support, and leadership training. Financial assistance is available to those in need, to ensure every child and teen has the opportunity to learn and grow at the Y. DSS vouchers are also accepted at the YMCA Future Leaders Center. The Y also offers School Break Camp on days when school is closed for teacher workdays, holidays or other school closings. Transportation can be provided from some school locations to the YMCA location after school. Please contact the Childcare office for those specifics. With back to school almost in session and so many activities for the whole family at the YMCA, we are inviting community members to join as YMCA members in the month of August. All who join and sign up for after school care at the same time during August will receive a free back pack. Your children will be entering the new school year Y style!
