Friday, July 13, 2018 NCC Celebrates 50 Years of Industry Training Nash Technical Institute was founded in 1967, and one year later the College began offering industrial programs including architectural drafting, air conditioning and refrigeration, electrical installation and maintenance, industrial power sewing and welding. For over 50 years, Nash Community College has built a reputation as a local training provider for advanced roles in manufacturing. College leaders have worked diligently to establish partnerships with area industry in order to respond to their unique training needs. As a result, NCC has significantly expanded student enrollment and the campus footprint over the years, and graduates have made an impact on the economic prosperity of this community. It’s an exciting time for local citizens with Nash Community College opening a newly constructed Advanced Manufacturing building this month. Thanks to North Carolinians who voted for the Connect NC Bond supporting statewide efforts to strategically improve higher education, state parks, agriculture, safety, and other projects, Nash Community College received funding for construction and infrastructure improvements. The Advanced Manufacturing facility totaling approximately 16,000 square feet, is home to Electrical Systems Technology, Computer-Integrated Machining, and Electronics Engineering Technology, including robotics and a simulated manufacturing laboratory. This building is NCC’s strategic response to the needs of the complex industrial sector. Strong employer relationships have built trust among recruiters visiting campus regularly seeking talented new employees. The dedication of the new facility is a testament to the campus’ continued commitment to helping meet the evolving needs of the community. Students will learn real-world skills in the new instructional spaces as they prepare to enter the workforce and earn a living wage. Others will transfer to four-year institutions to continue their education in order to take on advanced positions in manufacturing. Many NCC graduates (approximately 90 percent) will work in this community. President Dr. Bill Carver said, “Good projects take all kinds of leadership to spur people to action. This expansion project, like many of the programs at NCC, has many partners. County leadership worked with the College, and with administrative approval, got the ball rolling. Some incredibly generous individuals have also provided private support.” Nash Community College could not support its commitment to developing a skilled workforce and enhancing the quality of life for all citizens, nor could the College continue to expand its advanced manufacturing programs without the ongoing support of grantors and industry partners. In addition to ConnectNC Bond funds, support for the building was provided by Duke Energy Foundation, North Carolina Community College System, North Carolina Department of Transportation and Golden LEAF Foundation. Special thanks to industry partners: Cummins Rocky Mount Engine Plant, Haas, Honeywell Aerospace, K.A.M. Tool and Die, New Standard Corporation, Ossid, Pfizer and many others. These buildings belong to the community and will serve the region for many years to come. Nash Community College is now enrolling students for fall semester. Classes begin August 20. NCC Student Wins Gold at National Competition Nash Community College SkillsUSA members competed and won awards during the 54th Annual National Leadership and Skills Conference held June 25-29, 2018, in Louisville, KY. NCC, competing for the first time in the Technical Computer Applications category, won first place at nationals after placing first in North Carolina. Final national results: Heather Poythress, 1st in Technical Computer Applications; Celeste Powell, Brandy Davis, Gabrielle Simmons, 6th in Career Pathways Showcase; and Emanuel Castaneda, 32nd in Welding. NCC to Open New Facilities Golden LEAF Foundation Supports NCC Advanced Manufacturing Expansion Nash Community College has been awarded $250,000 by the Golden LEAF Foundation’s Community Based Grants Initiative in support of its Advanced Manufacturing Expansion. Through the addition of advanced technologies, this project will positively impact NCC’s Computer-Integrated Machining and the Industrial Systems Technology Curriculum Program enrollment and completion, students participating in internship/apprenticeship programs, and students employed in the industry. The additional equipment will increase hands-on training time and decrease the student/equipment ratio, increasing the number of NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills) credentials earned. The addition of the CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) lathes will allow students to earn CNC/NIMS credentials that have not been available to students in the past. Moreover, the program will expand to allow hands-on pneumatics skills training. Also, the precision measurements instrument and multimeter equipment to be acquired through this grant will support students as they earn National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3) certifications in precision measurements instrument and multimeter, never before offered at NCC. These third-party stackable credentials can offer enhanced employment potential and higher productivity on the job, in industries such as automotive, diesel/heavy-duty, electrical, engineering, general repair, HVAC, surface transportation, manufacturing, metrology lab, metalworking, aerospace, transportation, and energy. Credentials earned, NIMS and NC3, are anticipated to increase by approximately 30% as a result of the equipment addition. This project will better prepare NCC students, most of whom are either unemployed or underemployed, for full-time employment with industry partners. Industry project partners include, but are not limited to, Berry Global, Cummins, Honeywell, Kaba Ilco, New Standard Corporation, and Triangle East Tooling.
