LOCAL YMCA WORKS TO EMPOWER YOUNG GIRLS, WITH THE HELP OF THE ROCKY MOUNT MILLS Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop self- respect and healthy lifestyles through running. The Harrison Family YMCA is proud to offer this terrific afterschool program for young girls. Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique. Physical activity is woven into the program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. At the end of each season, the girls participate in a 5K event. This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience of the curriculum. Practice will begin the week of March 12th and registration closes on March 2nd for this spring season, so it is important to go ahead and register as soon as possible. The program lasts for 10 weeks with two days of practice a week. With the health and diversity of our community in mind, The Rocky Mount Mills has graciously agreed to sponsor this program, which will allow scholarship opportunities for girls across the area. The spring season celebratory ending race will also be the Rocky Mount Mills 5K on June 2nd. You can read more about the event here: https://www.mill5k.com/. Currently, girls can register for this Program at the YMCA or online at HarrisonFamilyY.org. There are two site locations hosting this program, including the YMCA and G.W. Bulluck Elementary. More sites may become available as the YMCA works to confirm community locations. If your school or church is interested in hosting a site, please let the YMCA know. Sponsorship Opportunities are available beginning at the $250 level, and Volunteer Opportunities are available as well including coaches and running buddies for the 5K event.
