The YMCA offers a Time to Explore with Before & After School Care The Harrison Family YMCA is open for enrollment into their Before & After School Care programming. At YMCA After School, kids expand their learning beyond the classroom. Trained child care staff use a balanced curriculum with opportunities for character development, STEM activities, arts and humanities, community service and physical activity. The YMCA is here to provide your child with a safe, caring environment full of fun and learning! YMCA After School is a structured program with time for kids to start homework, engage in active fun and enjoy a snack with friends. The trained counselors help each child to be his or her best by developing individual potential, building self-esteem, encouraging healthy behavior, respecting diversity, and imparting positive values. The Y provides 13 locations to conveniently serve as many children and families as possible. Locations include the Y’s 5 Star licensed “Future Leaders” Childcare Center, Bailey Elementary, Benvenue Elementary, Coopers Elementary, Englewood Elementary, M.B. Hubbard Elementary, Nashville Elementary, Red Oak Elementary, Spring Hope Elementary, Swift Creek Elementary, Winstead Avenue Elementary, Rocky Mount Preparatory, and Martin Millennium Academy. The program consists of after school, before school, before & afterschool combined, drop-in afterschool only and all day programming when school is out, which is called “holiday camp”. Whatever you need, the Y will be there for your needs. One in four U.S. children is left unsupervised at the end of school day, according to the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness advocacy organization. With the start of the new school year, the Harrison Family YMCA encourages parents/caregivers to make sure that their children are involved in safe, educational experiences after school hours. “Research shows that afterschool programs can help children perform better in school, practice healthy habits and engage in positive lifestyle behaviors. If left unsupervised at the end of the school day, students miss out on positive influences that encourage achievement and deter risk-taking activities,” said Jacquelyn Price, Chief Executive Officer, Harrison Family YMCA. “The Y’s afterschool programs promote a love for learning, social and emotional development, healthy choices, and provide children with an extra support system through positive role models and caring adults.” The Y is a leading nonprofit committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen and through afterschool programming, supporting their social-emotional, cognitive, and physical development from birth to career. Financial assistance is also available to those in need, to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn and grow at the Y. You must apply at the YMCA. Annual Campaign Funds are raised each year to help provide this benefit to those that need the Y’s services most.
