Harrison Family YMCA works to increase civic engagement and social responsibility in our community The Harrison Family YMCA has a top priority in one of their focus areas of social responsibility, to help close gaps in the community with involvement and civic engagement. In an effort to increase the culture of volunteerism in our local Y, as well as our community, the Y is launching a Togetherhood Program. Togetherhood is YMCA of the USA’s signature social responsibility program. Many YMCAs across the world are taking part in this program with their members and community, and are seeing major increases in volunteers and community engagement. As the Y’s member-led volunteer service program, Togetherhood connects people from all backgrounds to plan and implement volunteer projects that respond to our community’s most pressing needs. In the process, volunteers form lasting connections with one another, reducing social isolation and creating more cohesive communities. Examples of projects may be partnering with the school district for a community garden, partnering with the Salvation Army to prepare meals, or any other local service project already happening for the better good of our community. If you are interested in exploring how you can serve, options for Togetherhood include serving on the planning committee to determine what projects you will do within that year, sign up to lead one of the local projects, or just volunteer your time for a one day hands on project. Where ever your passion lies, there is a place for you on the Y’s new Togetherhood Volunteer Program. “I now see the Y as the house of the community, where people come together to make a better society,” says another Y member and Togetherhood Volunteer.
