Theater Rocky Mount, N.C.-In American history, many days are regarded as pivotal, and there are very few more important than April 3, 1968, the night the Civil Rights Movement lost its greatest leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In a gripping reimagining of the events, “The Mountaintop” depicts King’s final night. Set entirely in room 306 of the Lorraine Motel, the critically acclaimed play comes to the Booker T. Theater for three performances, April 27-29 at 7:30 p.m., and one matinee performance, April 30, at 2 p.m. “’The Mountaintop’ is an incredibly well-crafted play by the extremely talented Katori Hall,” says Brooke Edwards, theatre manager for the Imperial Centre and the play’s director. “It won the Olivier Award for Best New Play in London, and I saw it on Broadway in 2011. I have been in love with it ever since.” The intimate setting of the Booker T. Theater is perfect for this intense, yet humorous, one-act play. “The Mountaintop” stars two of Rocky Mount's finest local actors, Daphne Trevathan as Camae and Greg Spence as Dr. King.
