The games are a partnership among five counties, including Nash, Edgecombe, Halifax, Northampton and Wilson. Registration for participation ends Monday, April 3, 2017. “We have senior competitors that come from as far away as Scotland Neck,” says Alex Langley, Senior Center manager. “It is pretty inspiring when you see someone in their 90’s throwing shotput.” This year, events include various track and field sports along with tennis, golf, bowling, horseshoes, shuffleboard, croquet, badminton and table tennis. “Some of our events are highly competitive, while others are a little more laid back,” says Langley. “Being active is key to a healthy lifestyle, and that is what the Down East Senior Games seeks to promote.” While athletics are one focus of the games, other events, such as the SilverArts, include the visual arts such as painting, drawing and photography, basket weaving, knitting, quilting and performing arts. Registration for the Down East Senior Games is $15 per person and includes events, medals and a t-shirt. Winners from the local games qualify for the state games.
