Wesleyan Fondly Remembers Coach Don Scalf Donald "Coach" Lee Scalf, one of North Carolina Wesleyan College's first faculty members and who many consider the father of Wesleyan athletics, passed away March 7, 2017. Don Scalf taught for 36 years, coached for 18 years and served as Athletics Director for 6 years at NC Wesleyan. During his coaching career, Scalf's teams won conference championships in basketball (1966) and golf (1970-1973), earning him Conference Coach of the Year honors on four occasions. In addition to his role as the first coach in both Bishop basketball and golf history, he also served as head coach for the College's inaugural women's volleyball team in 1974. In fact, NCWC's "Scalf Field" for soccer/lacrosse and "Don Scalf Court" for basketball/volleyball are named in honor of his dedication to Battling Bishops athletics. A founding father of the USA South (then the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) in 1963, Scalf served as its Secretary-Treasurer for 25 years. His commitment to the student-athlete, guardianship of the value of academic achievement and devotion to the principles of Division III athletics set a standard that holds steadfast in the Conference today. For this reason, the conference presents its prestigious Don Scalf Award to one deserving male and female student-athlete on a yearly basis. Coach Scalf was inducted into the North Carolina Wesleyan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2010, Coach Scalf earned recognition in the USA South's Inaugural Hall of Fame class, while the Bishops' annual Don Scalf Invitational continues to be a highlight for Wesleyan's golf program. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, JoAnne Scalf; daughter Kay; son Ken and wife, Sue; grandchildren, Kelly and Andrew; and brother Bob. In memory of Coach Scalf, the family has requested donations be made to the Don Scalf Endowed Scholarship Fund at North Carolina Wesleyan College, 3400 N. Wesleyan Blvd., Rocky Mount, NC 27804. Alumni Spotlight Ricky Ciuffetelli '15 NCWC Admissions Counselor When Ricardo "Ricky" Ciuffetelli first came to NCWC in January 2012 he did not know anyone and his English was not the best. But as soon as he stepped foot on campus, he was able to connect with Wesleyan as a student and now as an admissions counselor for the college. Ricky, a native of Caracas, Venezuela was recruited by Wesleyan to play baseball. "I really didn't know anything about the school, Rocky Mount, or the State of North Carolina in general. When I was being recruited, I was back in Venezuela and did not have the time or resources to come for a first visit or a tour. So my parents and I went on the internet and we saw that North Carolina Wesleyan College had a great baseball program and tradition, so we really liked that. Then we looked up North Carolina, and we saw that Rocky Mount was close to the coast, close to Virginia, close to DC, and we literally said well it looks like there are things to do around there. Let's give it a shot. So I pretty much came on an adventure, and that was one of the best decisions I have ever made." While at Wesleyan, the college became Ricky's home. The baseball team was his family away from home. He was involved in all kinds of activities and worked at the bookstore. Ricky said "What got me to fall in love with North Carolina Wesleyan College was the fact that I was able to be somebody, not just a number. I was known, and I was always taken care of. From my baseball team, to the international students, to the rest of the athletes, regular students and even professors and staff, everybody just was always there for me and took care of me. As a student, Wesleyan had a huge impact on me. Wesleyan helped me become the person I am today." Ricky is currently an admissions counselor at NC Wesleyan. He recruits incoming high school students to come to Wesleyan. His territory is the southern central area of North Carolina and the entire state of Virginia. He said "I chose Wesleyan as an employee because as a student I loved this place. I was very involved with the school, so when the opportunity came up and the school called me, I thought maybe I could give back to the school, and I don't think there is a better way to give back to the school than giving it my time and my efforts to make it a better school!" In addition to his job responsibilities, Ricky serves as a member of the NC Wesleyan Alumni Board. His goal as a member of the alumni board "is to help the alumni stay involved and connected with the college, as well as doing everything I can from the alumni perspective to help the school grow and get better."
