Small Business and Technology Development Center and the N.C. Community Colleges Small Business Center Network, has provided 13 loans totaling $195,000 to small businesses impacted by Hurricane Matthew. We are excited to announce that the application deadline for the program has been extended to March 20, 2017. Spring Flooding Safety Tips When spring hits, whether it's "official" or feels like spring, many of us are eager to get out of the office and into the fresh air. However, too much rain or thawing snow after a long winter from mountains can bring severe flooding. Floods are the most common and costly natural disaster in the United States. Click here for some things to keep in mind as the spring flood season draws near. Application Period for Hazard Mitigation Program Open The N.C. Emergency Management application period for the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program is now open. With the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Matthew on North Carolina, the state expects to see the largest HMGP offered since Hurricane Floyd. N.C. Emergency Management is accepting Letters of Interest for possible inclusion in the state's HMGP submission to FEMA. Questions regarding the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, technical assistance with applicant intake or eligibility can be directed to Nick Burk, Hazard Mitigation Grants Section Manager, at 919-825-2301, or Sharon Winstead, Hazard Mitigation Supervisor, at 919-825-2356. The deadline for receiving the letters is May 1, 2017. A separate goal of March 31, 2017, has been set for receiving letters for an expedited grant process for communities facing a more pressing resilient housing need. UPCOMING EVENTS 2017 NCACC District Meetings Each spring, the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners hosts a series of District Meetings throughout the state. The meetings offer county commissioners and management staff an opportunity to learn about the latest legislative developments in Raleigh, to share information from their conversations with legislators, to network with officials from other counties, and to learn about the latest NCACC programs and services that benefit counties. Click here for a meeting in your area. 2017 Regional Master Municipal Clerks Academies The UNC School of Government, in cooperation with the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) and the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks (NCAMC), is pleased to announce the schedule for this year's Regional Master Municipal Clerks Academies. The academies will take place on March 24 at Leland, March 31 at Wilson, April 21 at Cramerton and April 28 at High Point. Each academy will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. and will include the following sessions: Street Smarts!; Spreading the Joy: Limits on Multiple Office-Holding; Financing Capital Projects 101; and Clerk Trivia. Advocacy Day for Making Rural Districts a Priority in NC March 29, 2017 Hosted by former Congresswoman Eva Clayton While North Carolina has the second largest rural population in the nation, the unique needs of rural school districts are often forgotten among other education discussions. Over two-thirds of North Carolina's traditional public school districts are rural and nearly 40% of students in traditional public schools are educated in rural districts. HUD Secretary's Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation The 2017 Award will be given to a project that promotes affordable housing, community revitalization, and/or enhanced economic opportunities through the continued use or adaptive re-use of historic buildings and neighborhoods. The deadline for nominations is March 27, 2017 and details about the criteria and submission process for the HUD Historic Preservation Award are available now. USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Grants Applications close March 27, 2017 The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) announces the availability of $27 million in grants to fund innovative projects designed to strengthen market opportunities for local and regional food producers and businesses. US Department of Justice Project Safe Neighborhood Grants Applications are due March 28th US DOJ Project Safe Neighborhood program grants will address violent crime and gun crime reduction. Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) is designed to create safer neighborhoods through a sustained reduction in crime associated with gang and gun violence, and violent offenders. Grants up to $500,000 will fund strategic Project Safe Neighborhoods programs that will start in October. Regional Career Fair March 30, 2017 A regional career fair will be held on March 30, 2017 at The Impact Center, 821 Word Plaza, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm March 30, 2017. Only employers with job openings will participate and represent Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, Northampton and Wilson Counties. USDA Regional Conservation Partnership Program Pre-applications due April 21, 2017 Through this fourth Regional Conservation Partnership Program Announcement for Program Funding, NRCS will award up to $252 million dollars to locally driven, public-private partnerships that improve the nation's water quality, combat drought, enhance soil health, support wildlife habitat and protect agricultural viability. Division of Water Infrastructure Announces Available Funding The Division of Water Infrastructure in the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality has announced the spring 2017 funding round and related application training. Funding offered this round will include a portion of the Connect NC bond program and all applications must be received by the division no later than close of business on April 28, 2017. As part of the initiative, federal and state agencies started grant programs to help qualifying law enforcement agencies purchase the equipment needed to deploy robust, effective BWC programs.
