Media Contact: Tameka Kenan-Norman FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Public Affairs Manager February 14, 2017 (252) 972-1333 Rocky Mount Senior Center celebrates Black History Month Rocky Mount, N.C.-On Thursday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m., the Rocky Mount Senior Center will celebrate Black History Month with a program that includes a potluck lunch, winners from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Contest, entertainment and a fashion show. “The purpose of this program is to keep people abreast of the contributions that African Americans have made throughout history, especially when it comes to fashion,” said Sylvia Sharpe, programming assistant for the center. “We have 30 seniors who will model clothing from various periods throughout American history.” The center will also have a fashion exhibit on display from Feb. 20 – 24 featuring African American designers. “I would love for people to come in and see our exhibit,” added Sharpe. “We will have a pedal-powered sewing machine and fashions ranging from the 1500's to present-day.” Sharpe was not alone in her efforts to organize the event. The Black History Month Committee, compiled of Rocky Mount Senior Center staff and volunteers, as well as the Human Relations Department, collaborated to bring the fashion show and exhibit to the center.
